En Barranquilla me quedo!!

The Cartagena de la Indias, the famous city, in the Caribbean coast, is spectacular. Just after dropping off up in the north in the bus from Medellin we felt the Caribbean sun shining above us and together with a Peruvian and French friend we found a cheap place to leave our begs and took a walk around town.

The walls, the cannons, the charming downtown make this old town one of the prettiest from our trip and you won´t regret spending your time going from one bar to another while admiring all the colorful and historical houses. This is so true that even the most famous Colombian writer and one the of the most world recognized author Gabriel Garcia Marquez has a house there and that also inspired Francisco to star writing his own novel called: the Dilemas de Murta, part I, II and III. Very inspiring.

We also bought our amazing and small tent, which helped us a lot in Isla Barú, where we stayed camping in Playa Blanca, this amazing clear white beach, completely in contact with nature, snorkeling, reading, setting bonfires at night and looking up at the stairs. Great time!!

From Cartagena and Isla Baru we were ready for the Carnival of Barranquilla, considered the second biggest carnival in the world, after Rio of course. A friend who we met in Peru invited us to stay at his place and there we stayed with their family for 4 days. Of course Murta invaded the kitchen with excuse of helping, but ended up learning how to do Arepas Colombianas! We met a lot foreigners working for AISEC and enjoyed most part of the carnival with them.

Our friend Andre took us all over town and taught us the most typical things from the Colombian coast. People from this region have a very strong accent, quite different from the Paisas, from Medellin or the Rolos from Bogotá. The typical is definitely the famous Vallenato, led by Silvestre Dangond.

The carnival in Barranquilla is a very popular party where most part of the day everyone goes out to watch the paredes in the main avenues and at night everyone stays out to dance, see and being seen, throw cornstarch on each other and others. Very funny and a good taste of the local culture.
